Amazon Sets New Record for Most Renewable Energy Purchased by a Single Company.
Amazon’s clean energy endeavors have reached a milestone, with the company now holding the title of having the largest renewable energy portfolio in the world. The tech giant has added 133 new projects in 11 countries, increasing its renewable energy capacity by 8.3 GW, resulting in a portfolio that now surpasses 20 GW. This impressive feat is equivalent to powering over 15 million European homes and 5.3 million homes in the U.S. alone.
Since 2020, Amazon has been the leading corporate buyer of renewable energy and is dedicated to expanding its growth through innovative technology and solutions. The company’s relentless pursuit of sustainability has placed it on track to reach its goal of powering operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, a full five years ahead of its original target set for 2030.
Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio encompasses 401 projects spread across 22 countries, including 164 wind and solar farms and 237 rooftop solar projects. In 2022, the company added 25 new projects and embarked on work in three additional countries. These projects are expected to generate a total of 56,881 GWh of clean energy annually.
According to Kyle Harrison, head of sustainability research at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, “Amazon’s clean energy portfolio is not only at the top of corporate charts but is now among the leading utilities globally as well. Despite a year plagued by the global energy crisis, supply chain disruptions, and high-interest rates, the company was still able to announce a new annual record of clean energy. This speaks to Amazon’s forward thinking and expertise in navigating power markets and executing long-term contracts.”
Amazon’s investments in renewable energy demonstrate its unwavering commitment to a sustainable future and its proficiency in navigating the energy market. The company’s status as a leader among corporations and utilities is a shining example for others to follow. With a record-breaking renewable energy portfolio, Amazon is making a noticeable impact in reducing carbon emissions and promoting the use of clean energy.
